Vintage Handmade
Jou & Uba
from the Legend of Takasago,
a traditional Noh play
involving a loving & long married couple.
Bodies of figures, as much as I
can see are wood. Gofun finish, I believe or
something to appear as such, on faces.
Features are delicately carved with open eyes
and the female mouth.
All the clothing is made of beautiful woven fiber cloth.
The lining that is visible appears to have
Japanese writing, perhaps newsprint.
These were acquired from an estate
of world travelers. There is no
marking on the dolls.
Sadly, unlike many of their
souvenirs these were not dated.
Jou, male, is 9" tall.
He is missing his rake.
Uba, woman, is 8 1/2" tall.
Here broom is present.
Their hair is a little wild
and there is creasing on Jou's belt.
Some fray at the ends of the garments and
where the cloth has long lengths of
woven fiber.
They both must have been attached to a
platform. There are pointed wooden sticks
that extend past the feet. Tips have some
adhesive residue.
