Description
Collector’s Henry VIII & Mary Queen Of Scots Original Peg Dolls made in London 1981, per original handwriting on bottom of each case.Henry VIII (1491-1547) was King of England from 1509 until his death in 1547.
Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, reigned over Scotland from 1542 until her forced abdication in 1567.
Dolls are made from hand-painted wooden clothespins. Artisan-crafted from quality materials, the clothes are highly detailed, historically accurate, in Tudor-era style. Purchased from the well-known superstore, Selfridge’s, while on vacation in London in 1981. A remnant of the price tag is in Mary’s case.
Mary’s blonde hair is fashioned from thread. She wears a beautiful black velvet dress with white lace cuffs and lace collar. Her headdress is adorned with tiny faux seed pearls. She holds a flat black, “Bible”, with ineligible writing on the back. A silver metal cross and metal flower with faux seed pearl hang from a silver metal chain wrapped around her waist.
Henry has brown fuzzy hair and beard. He’s decked out in a rich brocade beneath a deep green velvet coat and cloth hat, complete with feather. Neck and hat are adorned with gold metal chains. His skirt is pleated, as seen in paintings of him.
Both dolls are in excellent condition and each is secured to a simple plastic stand that is glued to a cardboard base. Clear, thin, flexible plastic cases with lids show wear from age and tape.
Dolls are just under 5” each. Cases are 5” tall x 6” across x 19” around.
