Description

"Holly Doll" is a 6 1/2" jointed wooden doll that was by hand carved by Helen Bullard or by one of the artists who worked with her in her Tennessee studio circa 1951-on.  She is an example of a "Tennessee Mountain Kid," though untagged.  She is carved entirely of wood with arms and legs jointed at their shoulders and thighs, and with a head that moves stiffly from side to side.   Her face is simply painted, and her blonde hair is fashioned into braids from floss.  She wears a pink and white cotton check dress, a coordinating bonnet, and a pair of pantalets edged in lace.  Her outfit is discolored and dusty from age and storage, while her carved wood sustains imperfections common to the "whittling" process.  Her left foot is chipped.  The Tennessee Mountain Kids were handmade in 1951 in a production of 6000 dolls, and some may have been "staff produced."  Helen Bullard was a premier wooden doll artist who was elected the first president of NIADA.   Included with this "Tennessee Mountain Kid" is a handwritten note by her original owner that reads "Lucy-Tennessee (bought at Palmer House-Chicago) carved wood."
