VTG Antique Pleasant Hill Academy Carved Wood Primitive Appalachian Dolls Pair
Here is a Wonderful pair of primitive,
Appalachian Mountain,
hand carved, jointed cedar wood dolls each measuring about 10" tall (very similar to the pair shown on page 52, "
American Folk Dolls
" by Wendy Lavitt). Representing an older couple of settlers from North Carolina circa 1930s, (similar to the pair in the Brooklyn Children's Museum and those dolls carved by Helen Bullard) The male, named
Uncle Alex
wears blue denim overalls over a light blue cotton shirt with long sleeves and collar (missing his black felt brimmed hat). The woman named
Aunt Jinny*
wears a beautiful long, soft  printed calico prairie dress over unbleached cotton pantaloons and slip as well as a long, soft plaid, homespun cotton apron and large matching prairie-style bonnet with big brim. Both dolls have nicely turned and very detailed swivel heads, hands, hair, ears and facial details as well as smooth working joints at their shoulders, hips and knees.
In the early 1930's a school, Pleasant Hill Academy was formed in Brown county, TN to teach crafts and trades to the mountain children. Polly Page, Helen Bullard and a few others attended that school.. dressed them and
named them after actual persons, pioneers and characters
on the mountains.
Polly carved them using cedar wood and a Sears pocket knife and sold them from a tiny store on the property.
